This is a project that really cemented my love of fiber art. I never thought of myself as a fiber artist before beginning this project and the one previously, but designing custom pieces like these lampshades is one of the coolest things I’ve ever done with my craft. It was really fulfilling, especially because the lampshades were finished exactly according to the specification sheet I was given. I was able to use my craft to create something worthy of public display – these lampshades now hang in a restaurant in Chicago!
What: Custom knitted wool lampshades for Nando’s Peri-Peri.
How: Aria Group Architects contacted me while I was working on another lamp project for them, and began communicating with me about these knitted wool lampshades for one of their clients’ restaurants. Their client is Nando’s Peri-Peri, which is a restaurant serving peri-peri chicken. Their design and architecture is distinctly South African, with locally and independently sourced artwork from various artists including myself. After designing a custom pattern according to the architect designer’s specifications and inspiration photos, I knit each lampshade by hand from 100% non-flammable wool to be fitted over an LED lightbulb with socket.
